Happy Birthday Switzerland

This year Switzerland has two reasons to celebrate August: first of all – the country is celebrating its birthday on August 1st, and second – for the first time in eleven years, the traditional Unspunnen Festival meeting is held again – a folklore festival of the superlative. Today and tomorrow (31.07 – 01.08.2017) Switzerland will turn into a bright star with fireworks, music, and lots of visitors who will come to celebrate a world full of Swiss traditions – ranging from nightly mountain-top bonfires to wrestlers and yodeling groups of people in traditional costume.

31 July to 1 August 2017  – the history of Switzerland goes back to 1291 when three original cantons, Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden founded the Confederation with a loyalty oath on the Rütli. The occasion continues to be celebrated today with fireworks and festivities. And, of course, with mountain-top bonfires that light up the valleys and mountains – a strong symbol of solidarity. As I live in Canton Schaffhausen, I celebrate this day often with friends at Europes biggest waterfalls – The Rheinfalls. The celebration starts at 9 p.m. and there is a special lighting which changes the color of the water. The fireworks last for 10 – 15 minutes and are nicely coordinated with the music. Afterward, you can enjoy a warm snack and drink in the city center in one of the many snack and beer stands. The celebrations last until late hours.

26 August to 3 September 2017  – 11 years on, the time has finally come round again: The nine-day Unspunnen Swiss costume and alpine cowherd festival are being celebrated in Interlaken.

I’m really happy of being in Switzerland. Thank you for everything and taking care of me <3
